Red Panda Network

Red Pandas are classified as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in the Red List of Threatened Species(version 2021-2)

The global red panda population has declined by 50% over the last 20 years and it is estimated that there are less than 10,000 and as few as 2,500 red pandas remaining in the wild.

Red pandas are unique. They are the only species remaining in their taxonomic family — a living relic of the past. Saving them is essential.

Habitat loss is the #1 threat to red pandas

Red Panda habitat in Nepal is fragmented into 400 small forest patches. 70% of their habitat lies outside of protected areas in either Community Forests or private land. Forests are fragmented due to deforestation, as they are converted to farmland and settlement, and degraded by unsustainable livestock grazing and resource harvest by local communities. Habitat is also being fragmented by development projects including roads, hydro-projects, electric transmission lines, and mining, and anthropogenic forest fires.

The Red Panda Network (RPN) multi-tiered solution to habitat loss is protection and restoration.

The RPN education and sustainable livelihood programs are empowering communities in Nepal to protect their forests and their environmental heritage. Reforestation of the core habitat, connection of the fragmented forest, creating wildlife corridors, are essential for sustaining a viable red panda population.

Since the RPN launched “Plant A Red Panda Home” in 2019, they have planted nearly 50,000 trees in core habitat that is crucial to the survival of red pandas in Nepal. The goal is to continue expanding this initiative and reforest 50 hectares – reaching 100,000 trees for the red pandas.
